🎼 A World Famous Conductor
Zubin Mehta is an Indian conductor who has spent decades leading many of the world’s major orchestras. His career has included long associations with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and orchestras and opera companies throughout Europe.
🎻 A Musical Family
Mehta was born in Bombay, now Mumbai, India, into a musical family. His father, Mehli Mehta, was a violinist, conductor, and founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. Zubin initially pursued premedical studies before deciding to devote himself to music.
🎓 Studying in Vienna
In 1954, Mehta left India for Vienna, where he studied conducting under Hans Swarowsky at the Academy of Music. He won the Liverpool International Conducting Competition in 1958, and while still a young conductor he began appearing with some of Europe’s most prestigious orchestras.
🌴 Los Angeles & New York
Mehta served as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1962 to 1978. In 1978, he became music director of the New York Philharmonic, remaining in the position for 13 years, the longest music director tenure in that orchestra’s history.
🎶 50 Years With Israel
Mehta developed an especially long relationship with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He became its music adviser in 1969, music director in 1977, and music director for life in 1981. After completing his farewell concerts in 2019, he was named the orchestra’s Music Director Emeritus.
🏆 A Lifetime in Music
Mehta’s career has brought him numerous international honors, including Japan’s Praemium Imperiale and India’s Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony. He has also supported young musicians through educational programs, including the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation in Mumbai and the Buchmann Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv.
