🌍 What Were the Seven Wonders?
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were remarkable buildings and monuments celebrated by ancient Greek writers and travelers. The familiar list includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, and Lighthouse of Alexandria.
🔺 Great Pyramid of Giza
Built in Egypt as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu, the Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest wonder on the list. Constructed during the third millennium BC, it is also the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that remains substantially intact today.
🌿 Gardens & Great Statues
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were described as an extraordinary series of elevated gardens, although their existence and exact location remain uncertain. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was a huge seated representation of the Greek god Zeus created by the celebrated sculptor Phidias.
🏛️ Temple & Mausoleum
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was renowned for its enormous scale and elaborate decoration. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was the monumental tomb of Mausolus, a ruler of Caria, and became so famous that the word “mausoleum” eventually came to mean a large or impressive tomb.
☀️ Colossus & Lighthouse
The Colossus of Rhodes was a gigantic bronze statue of the sun god Helios erected on the Greek island of Rhodes. The Lighthouse of Alexandria, built on the island of Pharos in Egypt, guided ships toward Alexandria’s harbor and became one of antiquity’s most famous landmarks.
✨ One Wonder Remains
Earthquakes, fires, destruction, and the passage of centuries eventually claimed six of the ancient wonders. Only the Great Pyramid of Giza survives substantially intact, preserving a physical link to a list of extraordinary structures that has fascinated people for more than two thousand years.
