ANSWER: NEW SPECIES OF FLYING MAMMALS THAT HAVE BECOME VERY GOOD AT SPELLING WORDS: ALPHA-BATS.

Bats

Flying Mammals • Order Chiroptera

Overview

Bats are mammals belonging to the order Chiroptera. With more than 1,400 known species, they are one of the largest and most diverse groups of mammals and can be found across most of the world.

Built for Flight

Bats are the only mammals capable of true sustained flight. Their wings are formed by a thin membrane of skin stretched across elongated finger bones, giving them remarkable control and maneuverability while flying.

Echolocation

Many bats navigate and locate prey using echolocation. They produce high-frequency sounds and interpret the returning echoes, allowing them to determine the location, distance, size, and movement of objects even in darkness.

What’s for Dinner?

Bat diets vary greatly among species. Many eat insects, while others feed on fruit, nectar, pollen, fish, or small animals. Only three living species are vampire bats, which obtain nourishment from blood.

Hanging Around

Many bats spend their resting hours roosting upside down in caves, trees, buildings, and other sheltered locations. Specialized feet and tendons allow them to maintain their hanging position with little muscular effort.

Importance

Bats perform important ecological roles around the world. Insect-eating species help control insect populations, while fruit- and nectar-feeding bats can disperse seeds and pollinate plants, making them valuable contributors to many ecosystems.
