🥤 COCA-COLA 🥤
ESTABLISHED MAY 8, 1886 • ATLANTA, GEORGIA • AN AMERICAN SOFT DRINK ICON
🥤 FIVE CENTS FOR A GLASS OF HISTORY
Atlanta pharmacist John Stith Pemberton introduced Coca-Cola at Jacobs’ Pharmacy on May 8, 1886. Originally sold for five cents a glass, the new soda fountain drink averaged just nine servings a day during its first year.
✍️ TWO LETTERS THAT MADE HISTORY
Pemberton’s bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, suggested the name Coca-Cola because he believed two capital C’s would look attractive in advertising. He also created the flowing handwritten logo that remains recognizable more than a century later.
🍾 FROM THE SODA FOUNTAIN TO THE BOTTLE
In 1894, Mississippi businessman Joseph Biedenharn began bottling Coca-Cola at his Vicksburg soda fountain. His idea allowed customers to enjoy the beverage away from the pharmacy counter and helped lay the groundwork for its widespread distribution.
🏺 A BOTTLE YOU COULD RECOGNIZE IN THE DARK
In 1915, the Root Glass Company of Indiana designed Coca-Cola’s distinctive curved bottle. The goal was to create a shape so recognizable that customers could identify it by touch alone, even in the dark.
🎅 THE SANTA CLAUS CONNECTION
Beginning in 1931, artist Haddon Sundblom created memorable Coca-Cola advertisements featuring a cheerful, rosy-cheeked Santa Claus. Coca-Cola did not invent Santa’s red suit, but these popular illustrations helped reinforce his familiar modern appearance.
📣 WHEN FANS DEMANDED THE ORIGINAL
In 1985, Coca-Cola introduced a reformulated drink commonly called New Coke, replacing its longtime original formula. Public complaints were so intense that the company brought back the original taste just 79 days later under the name Coca-Cola Classic.
