CARGO SHIPS

OCEAN FREIGHT • GLOBAL TRADE • MARITIME TRANSPORTATION

🌍 KEEPING THE WORLD MOVING

Cargo ships transport enormous quantities of goods between countries, making them essential to international trade. From clothing and electronics to grain and machinery, much of the world’s merchandise travels across the oceans aboard these vessels.

📦 THE CONTAINER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Modern container shipping took off in 1956 when American trucking entrepreneur Malcolm McLean introduced a system for moving standardized freight containers by sea. His idea helped transform global commerce by making it faster and easier to transfer goods between ships, trucks, and trains.

🚢 DIFFERENT SHIPS, DIFFERENT LOADS!

Container ships carry stacked steel boxes, while bulk carriers transport loose materials such as coal, grain, and iron ore. Tankers are specially designed for liquid cargo, and roll-on/roll-off ships allow cars and trucks to drive directly aboard.

🏗️ STACKED HIGH ABOVE THE WATER

The largest container ships can carry more than 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, on a single voyage. Containers are secured both below deck and in towering stacks above it, creating the appearance of a floating city of colorful steel boxes.

🧭 TWO CANALS, COUNTLESS JOURNEYS

The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean and Red Seas, while the Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. These famous waterways help cargo ships avoid lengthy voyages around Africa or South America, saving considerable travel distance.

⚓ THE CREW BEHIND THE CARGO

Despite their enormous size, modern cargo ships often operate with relatively small crews who manage navigation, engineering, maintenance, and safety. Seafarers may spend months away from home, crossing oceans and navigating changing weather to deliver goods to ports around the world.
