Apple Seeds

Apple Reproduction • Genetics • Growing New Trees

🍎 Inside an Apple

Apple seeds are found inside the fruit’s central core. Each seed contains a tiny plant embryo along with stored nutrients that can help support its earliest growth if conditions are right for germination.

🌱 A Seed Won’t Copy the Apple

Plant a seed from a favorite apple and the resulting tree will not normally produce an exact copy of that apple. Apple trees grown from seeds are genetically different from their parents because the seeds are produced through sexual reproduction and combine genetic material from two trees.

🌳 Why Apple Trees Are Grafted

Growers who want another tree of a particular apple variety usually reproduce it by grafting rather than planting its seeds. A piece of the desired tree is joined to suitable rootstock, allowing varieties such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp to retain their recognizable characteristics.

❄️ Seeds Need a Winter

Apple seeds normally require a period of cold, moist conditions before they will germinate. This process, called cold stratification, mimics the winter conditions a seed would experience outdoors before warmer spring weather signals that it is time to begin growing.

🧪 What’s Inside the Seeds?

Apple seeds contain amygdalin, a naturally occurring plant compound that can release cyanide when the seed is crushed or chewed and digested. Accidentally swallowing a few intact seeds is generally not a concern, but intentionally eating large quantities of crushed or chewed seeds should be avoided.

🍏 Every Seed Is a Surprise

Because apple seedlings are genetically unique, growing an apple tree from seed is something of an experiment. The eventual fruit may differ from the apple the seed came from in sweetness, size, color, texture, and flavor, making every seed the potential beginning of a different kind of apple.
