⛳ What Does Par Mean?
In golf, par is the score that an expert golfer would be expected to make on a particular hole. Each hole is assigned a par, usually 3, 4, or 5, and those numbers are added together to establish par for the entire course.
📏 Par 3, Par 4 & Par 5
A par 3 is designed to allow an expert golfer to reach the green with the first stroke, while a par 4 generally allows two strokes and a par 5 three strokes to reach the green. Par also assumes two putts once the ball reaches the putting surface.
🏌️ Under or Over Par
Golf scores are often described in relation to par. A golfer who completes a par 4 in four strokes has made par. Taking three strokes is one under par, while taking five is one over par. The same system is used to track a player’s score across an entire round.
🐦 Birdies, Eagles & Bogeys
Golf has special names for scores compared with par. One stroke under par is a birdie, two under is an eagle, and three under is an albatross. One stroke over par is a bogey, while two over is commonly called a double bogey.
📜 Where “Par” Came From
The word “par” existed long before golf and means an accepted standard or level of equality. Golf adopted the term during the nineteenth century as a way of describing the expected standard score for a hole or course.
🏆 The Number Everyone Chases
Par gives golfers a common benchmark regardless of the course they are playing. Instead of looking only at total strokes, players can immediately see whether they are under, even with, or over the expected score, making par one of the most important numbers in the game.
