Overview
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a monumental sculpture carved into granite in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It depicts the faces of four United States presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
The Idea
South Dakota historian Doane Robinson proposed creating a large mountain sculpture to attract visitors to the state. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum became the driving artistic force behind the project and chose the four presidents as its subjects.
Carved into the Mountain
Work on Mount Rushmore began in 1927 and continued until 1941. Hundreds of workers helped remove enormous quantities of rock using dynamite, drills, and other tools. Each presidential head is approximately 60 feet tall.
Four Presidents
The memorial features George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Borglum selected them to represent important periods and themes in United States history, including the nation’s founding, expansion, development, and preservation.
An Unfinished Vision
Borglum originally envisioned a more extensive monument, with the presidents depicted farther down their bodies. He died in March 1941, and his son Lincoln Borglum helped oversee the final months of work. Construction ended later that year with the sculpture in the form seen today.
A Complex Legacy
Mount Rushmore became one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States, but its location carries a complicated history. The Black Hills are sacred to the Lakota and other Indigenous peoples, and disputes over United States control of the land remain an important part of the memorial’s broader story.
