What Is a Riddle?

A riddle is a puzzle presented through words, usually as a question or statement that contains clues to a hidden answer. Solving one often requires careful thinking, wordplay, logic, or recognizing that the words have more than one possible meaning.

An Ancient Tradition

Riddles have been told for thousands of years and appear in the literature and folklore of many cultures. They were used not only for entertainment but also as tests of cleverness, teaching tools, and memorable ways to pass stories and ideas from one generation to another.

Two Main Types

Riddles are traditionally divided into two broad types. Enigmas describe something indirectly or metaphorically and challenge the listener to identify it, while conundrums usually depend on wordplay, puns, or a trick hidden within the question.

The Riddle of the Sphinx

One of the most famous riddles comes from the story of Oedipus and the Sphinx in Greek mythology. The Sphinx asks what creature walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening. The answer is a human, progressing from crawling as a baby to walking upright and later using a cane.

Playing With Language

Many riddles deliberately lead the solver toward an obvious but incorrect interpretation. Double meanings, unusual comparisons, misleading assumptions, and carefully chosen wording can disguise a surprisingly simple answer until the solver looks at the clues from a different angle.

Still Popular

Riddles remain popular in books, classrooms, games, puzzle collections, and everyday conversation. Their simple question-and-answer format makes them easy to share, while the challenge of discovering a concealed meaning gives solvers the satisfaction of an unexpected answer.
