Overview
Hide-and-seek is a traditional children’s game in which one player searches for the other players after they have hidden. Simple rules and little or no equipment have helped make it a familiar game across generations and cultures.
How to Play
One player is chosen to be the seeker, often called “it.” The seeker closes their eyes and counts to an agreed number while everyone else finds a place to hide. When the counting ends, the search begins.
Ready or Not!
A familiar tradition is for the seeker to announce “Ready or not, here I come!” before beginning the search. Depending on the rules being used, the first person found may become the seeker for the next round.
An Ancient Game
Games resembling hide-and-seek have existed for centuries. An early recorded version called apodidraskinda was described in ancient Greek tradition, showing that the basic idea of hiding while another person searches has very old roots.
Different Versions
Many variations of hide-and-seek are played around the world. Some include a home base that hiders try to reach safely, while the variation known as Sardines reverses the idea by having one person hide and everyone else search.
A Childhood Tradition
Hide-and-seek has endured because almost any suitable space can become part of the game. It combines running, observation, patience, strategy, and the simple suspense of wondering whether a hiding place will remain undiscovered.
