Overview

Winnie-the-Pooh is a fictional teddy bear created by English author A. A. Milne. The gentle, honey-loving bear and his friends became some of the most enduring characters in children’s literature.

Origins

Milne based many of the characters on stuffed animals belonging to his son, Christopher Robin Milne. The real Christopher Robin also inspired the boy who appears throughout the stories.

The Hundred Acre Wood

Pooh’s adventures take place in the Hundred Acre Wood, where he spends time with Christopher Robin, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga, Roo, and other familiar friends.

Books

The character appeared in Winnie-the-Pooh in 1926 and The House at Pooh Corner in 1928. Milne also featured Pooh and his companions in poetry collections for children.

Personality

Pooh is known for his kindness, loyalty, simple wisdom, and enormous fondness for honey. His calm personality and friendship with the other animals give the stories much of their warmth and humor.

Legacy

Winnie-the-Pooh has become one of the world’s most recognizable children’s characters. The original books, illustrations, films, television programs, toys, and adaptations have introduced Pooh and his friends to generations of readers and families.
